Semipalatinsk fortress was founded by Russian Tsar voevode Vasiliy Cheredov and his troops in 1718. The fortress was situated on the Irtysh river bank. This place is known as "Ancient Fortress" now. At the end of 19h century Semipalatinsk city was the place of political deportation. The Soviet power was established in Semipalatinsk city in February 1918. In 1997 Semipalatinsk region was united with East Kazakhstan region of Kazakhstan with capital in Ust-Kamenogorsk.
